Emmons-Winthrop Glacier

The Emmons-Winthrop is the standard route from the White River, and makes for an excellent descent through enormous glaciers.

The second most traveled route on the mountain, the Emmons-Winthrop is popular among skiers and riders for its relatively direct descent down thousands of feet of moderate-angle glacier terrain. Ranger infrastructure at Camp Schurman and a frequently established route improves the risk margins compared to more exploratory descents, but the hazard of crevasse fall, avalanche danger and/or sliding out on icy snow is very much still present on this route.

The route connects to the glacier off of the broad summit plateau, with the technical cruxes being large bergshrunds at the top of the glacier, close-out crevasses across the slope, and a broken up section to traverse back to a distinct ramp above camp called the corridor. More straightforward turns can then be enjoyed back down to Schurman and out the ripping Inter Glacier thousands of feet into Glacier Basin below.
