Winthrop Glacier Shoulder
Sharing the upper mountain with the Emmons-Winthrop route, the Winthrop Glacier Shoulder route continues directly down the prominent ridge to the sprawling glacier below.
Providing a possible path through a sea of ice, the Winthrop Glacier Shoulder follows a distinct feature down the upper reaches of Mount Rainier. The consistent shoulder provides a direct link down to the lower flanks of the Winthrop, with careful care descending the steep roll at the bottom and numerous bergshrunds and crevasses.
After safely exiting the Shoulder, skiers and riders can traverse back to Camp Schurman, or continue down the slope for further moderate angled glacier turns in a wild setting. The run continues straight down making a few detours around crevasse fields, before gaining St. Elmos pass to rejoin the normal route in Glacier Basin.
