Liberty Cap Ski Descents

The grandest and the scariest descents possible on Mount Rainier are located on it's North and Northwest Faces from sub-summit Liberty Cap.

Ever since Liberty Ridge was first descended on skis in 1980, the massive and foreboding dark side of the mountain has seen the occasional extreme ski descent. The great North and Northwest faces off Liberty Cap contain terrain of the largest scale found in this part of the world, a slice of a Himalayan face suspended high above the Puget Sound. Ski descents down these unmistakable features have been completed on sections of the Willis Wall, Liberty Ridge, Ptarmigan Ridge, Central Mowich Face and the Edmunds Headwall.

Attempting any of these routes as a ski objective is a highly serious and committing undertaking requiring a culmination of alpine skills and experience. Approach and exit strategies vary and this section of the mountain is highly remote, complex, and hazardous. A successful ski descent of one of these major alpine climbing routes will put you amongst a very small list of (crazy) people.
