Cog Railway
Route Details
Skin track follows the Mount Washington Cog Railway from the Marshfield Base Station on the west side toward Waumbek Station and higher. Stay just off the ties on the uphill side where possible to avoid hardware and ice around the rails, and give operating trains a wide berth.
Expect fully exposed alpine terrain above treeline with rapid weather shifts and strong NW winds common; watch for wind slab forming on lee sides of the track and around cut banks. Early and late season, thin cover hides pipes, rocks and rail infrastructure, so keep speed in check on the descent and treat this as a mellow, on-piste-style run rather than true backcountry.
The Cog is private infrastructure; respect any closures or instructions from railway staff and avoid blocking sidings, water tanks and work areas. Never assume you can ride the train down—tickets for downhill travel are limited and not guaranteed, so plan to ski back to the base under your own power.
For current operating info, uphill policies and winter access notes, see the operator’s site: https://www.thecog.com/.
