Andharban Trail

Andharban Trail is a one-way, descending long-distance hike in the Tamhini Ghats (Sahyadris). The route is known for its dense “dark forest” canopy, and it finishes at the backwaters of Bhira Dam near Patnus village.

A typical outline runs from Pimpri Village / near Pimpri Dam (often called Independence Point) down to Bhira Dam backwaters. Most people plan for vehicle drop-off at Pimpri and pickup at the Bhira/Patnus end because the trail doesn’t loop.

Expect several stream crossings and a long, sustained descent profile. The forest sections are where the trail feels most enclosed and shaded, and during monsoon this can come with fog and frequent wet ground.

There are no reliable water sources along the full route, so you need to carry enough for the hike (at least 3 liters per person). Plan your timing so you’re not relying on mid-trail refills you can’t count on.

Access is regulated: a local guide is mandatory, and entry requires a nominal fee/booking-style process with ID/age limits (minimum age 16 mentioned for permits). Entry limits apply, so you can’t treat it as walk-up and go.

Seasonality matters. The trail is best in monsoon and post-monsoon, but the wet conditions make the ground extremely slick; use footwear with solid grip and be ready for slippery stream crossings. Leeches are common in the humid, forested sections.
