Barron Canyon Trail

Barron Canyon Trail is a short Algonquin Provincial Park hike along the north rim of Barron Canyon. The trail follows the gorge edge with dramatic drop-offs toward the Barron River below.

Expect a moderately challenging effort for the distance: an initial climb brings you up to the canyon rim, and from there the route continues along the rim as it works through the canyon area.

The canyon here is about 100 m deep, and the route’s main purpose is seeing and learning about how the Barron Canyon was cut by post–last ice age meltwater and river flow.

The hike is described as a 1.5 km loop and typically takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete at a steady pace.

Safety is the big constraint on this route: the trail runs along high, unfenced cliff edges, so keep close control of kids and keep pets on a leash at all times.

A trail guide is set up with six stops that explain the canyon’s formation and history while you hike.
