Black Range Crest Trail #79

Black Range Crest Trail #79 is a long-distance hiking route that follows the crest of the Black Range through the Aldo Leopold Wilderness in Gila National Forest. The trail is split into two segments, both starting at Emory Pass on NM 152.

The north segment runs from Emory Pass toward Hillsboro Peak and continues about 27.7 miles to Reeds Peak, where it connects with Continental Divide National Scenic Trail #74. This section stays almost entirely within wilderness and is suitable only for hiking and horseback riding.

Along the crest, the route tracks the highest ground in the range and passes through forested terrain on the saddle-and-ridge line, including ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, and aspen.

The south segment leaves Emory Pass heading toward Sawyers Peak for about 8.3 miles one way and ends at Forest Road 886. Together, the full Black Range Crest Trail #79 covers about 36 miles.

Access and trailheads are centered on Emory Pass Vista parking on NM 152, where the #79 northbound trail begins just before the parking area; the #79 southbound parking is on the west side of NM 152 across from the Emory Pass Vista turnout.

Water on the crest depends on winter snowpack and springs may be unreliable after mild winters. Water may be found by dropping into canyons on connecting trails, but sources are not tested—plan to filter or treat what you collect.

The trail is designated for non-motorized use. In the Aldo Leopold Wilderness, bicycles are prohibited on portions of the route; motorized and mechanized vehicles are prohibited on Black Range Crest Trail #79.

Permits aren’t required for standard recreation, but permits are required for commercial or organized uses.
