Bourgeau Lake Trail
Bourgeau Lake Trail is an out-and-back day hike in Banff National Park (Alberta) with a typical target of ~13.8 km round trip to the lake. The route is built around a steady climb through the Wolverine Creek valley and into the Mount Bourgeau amphitheatre, ending at Bourgeau Lake.
The trailhead is off the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1), about 13.4 km west of downtown Banff. Expect a small parking area that fills quickly in summer; plan to arrive early if you’re hiking peak season.
Early on, the hike follows Wolverine Creek through a heavily wooded corridor where the sound of rushing water becomes noticeable as you approach Wolverine Canyon. Several stream crossings and cascades along the creek are part of the character of this section as the climb starts to build.
As you gain altitude, the hiking shifts from dense forest to more open alpine terrain near the basin around Mount Bourgeau. The route reaches a prominent viewpoint area near the waterfall section (around the 5.6 km mark in one common progression), then continues with switchbacks that ease the steeper ground before leveling out closer to the lake.
Near Bourgeau Lake, the trail enters a meadow area (described as dogwood shrubs) with more open surroundings and the lake framed by steep rock walls. This is the turnaround point for the standard Bourgeau Lake hike, commonly reached in roughly 7–7.5 km from the start depending on the track variation.
Optional extensions from the lake head toward the Harvey Pass area and the lakelets en route. The common stated extension is about 2.2 km further to Harvey Pass, with additional elevation continuing from there if you push toward Mt. Bourgeau.
