Hiking route

Burnt Point Loop is a moderate loop hike in the Tobermory area within Fathom Five National Marine Park. It’s a short side trip from the Bruce Peninsula Visitor Centre area, designed to take you from cedar-forest trail into shoreline terrain and back.

Distance is about 3.32 km, usually completed in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours for most hikers. The elevation gain is listed at 115 m for the loop.

Terrain is mixed and can get rugged: rough, rocky sections and uneven ground show up on the shoreline portions, with exposed roots and boulder-beach footing. Sturdy closed-toe hiking boots/shoes are the better call for traction.

The route opens with forest hiking from the visitor-centre area and continues to viewpoint moments along Georgian Bay. A key midway highlight is the Little Dunks Bay viewpoint, reached partway through the loop on the Georgian Bay side.

The loop then works toward Burnt Point itself, with additional lookouts over Georgian Bay’s rocky shoreline before bending back through woodland to complete the circuit. The most technical footing is typically concentrated in the shoreline sections and beaches.

Access is from the trail area across from Dunks Bay Lookout near the main visitor centre. The first ~800 m of the path toward the bay is flat and wheelchair-accessible; the remainder of the loop becomes rugged.

A park pass is required for entry to the trail area. The loop is also described as having sections that can close due to high water levels, so plan for the possibility of seasonal closures.
