Camino Yebra - Santa Orosia
Camino Yebra - Santa Orosia (GR 16.1; PR HU 4), also known as the “Ruta de las Ermitas”, is a circular long-distance hike from Yebra de Basa that climbs from the town up to the Santuario de Santa Orosia and returns by another sendero option through San Román.
Expect a full day effort in the 14–15 km range with roughly 750–900 m of ascent, and plan around 4.5–6 hours when you include breaks at the ermitas and time on the main viewpoints/faja sections.
The route is marked for staying on-trail: the ascent to Santa Orosia uses GR-16.1, and the return portion is guided by PR-94 together with GR-16 and an additional alternative footpath segment that comes back toward Yebra de Basa.
A large part of the mileage is on rocky, stony ground (loose stones and uneven footing are common), so your pacing matters on the steepest climbing stretches that concentrate most of the elevation gain early in the outing.
Between the climb and the sanctuary area, you pass multiple cliffside chapels/ermitas built into the rock faces; the route description specifically calls out a sequence including Santa Bárbara, San Blas, La Cueva, and San Cornelio, which you reach along the mid-mountain faja and approach terraces.
One of the main waypoints is the “Cascada del Chorro”, described as a curtain-like waterfall reached from near the Ermita de la Cueva and paired with access to the Iglesia de la Cueva via a short set of stairs.
Water access is documented at Yebra de Basa (a potable fountain in the Plaza de Santa Orosia) and at the Santuario de Santa Orosia (a spring source with three spouts at the sanctuary area).
For timing, the route is framed as best in spring or autumn, with a specific note that after rain the waterfall tends to be running; the same descriptions emphasize an overall irregular, rock-heavy trail profile across the ascent and return.
