Hiking route

Cape Pillar Track is a Tasman National Park day-hike-to-multi-day hike on the Tasman Peninsula, mapped here as a return route about 9.75–10 km (mapped coverage 0.98 of the expected distance). If you’re doing the classic extended walk, it’s typically approached as an overnight circuit rather than a simple day trip.

Route character is defined by sea-cliff terrain and “The Blade” section at the end, reached via a staircase and tight cliff-edge walking that delivers drops and exposure around Tasman Island country.

A common independent access pattern runs from Fortescue Bay: the hike to Cape Pillar follows the original/Old track line into the Cape Pillar area, then returns back the same way (or links with the wider Three Capes Track arrangement for multi-day itineraries).

Expect heavy stair traffic at times and sections that can turn muddy; the overall route includes boardwalk-style surfaces in places, but it’s still strenuous when conditions worsen.

Water planning matters: carry ample drinking water, since campsite/along-route water is handled as treated/treated-or-treated-yourself rather than “sip-and-go” along the track.

If you’re camping, you’re looking at designated sites in the Fortescue Bay to Bare Knoll / Munro Hut area for independent walkers, using self-sufficiency logistics (food and fuel stove).

In practice, this hike is best treated as a volatile-weather outing: pack layers and rain protection, and be ready for cold conditions even outside midwinter.

Before you go, you’ll need the appropriate Tasmania Parks Pass to enter Tasman National Park.
