Casque Isles Trail

Casque Isles Trail is a 50.94 km (famous hike) wilderness hiking route on the north shore of Lake Superior in northwestern Ontario. The route is a multi-day thru-hike option and is also commonly broken into shorter segments for day hikes or weekend outings.

The trail runs along the Lake Superior shoreline, moving “bay to bay” as it links the communities of Rossport, Schreiber, and Terrace Bay. Expect a mix of boreal forest travel and shoreline travel as you work through the different segment personalities.

Five main segments divide the hike, supported by 11 access locations. The segments range from about 6–12 km each, so it’s practical to tackle one or two sections if you don’t want the full thru-hike commitment.

Terrain on the Casque Isles Trail is described as difficult and not manicured: there are steep stretches with rope-assisted climbing in some places, rocky shoreline scrambling, and generally uneven footing typical of rugged north shore country.

Route character includes technical shoreline and cliff work on the Death Valley segment, plus sustained elevation on the route’s longer climbs—making it a serious backpacking objective even for experienced hikers.

Notable points on the route include Aguasabon Falls (on the Lyda Bay segment area near Terrace Bay) and cultural/heritage features such as pictographs on parts of the trail between Schreiber and Terrace Bay.

Trail structure and wayfinding are built around volunteer maintenance and marking: blue markers for the main trail and white markers for side/access trails. Access is distributed along Highway 17 with multiple parking/entry points, which makes logistical planning workable for segment hikers.
