Cavell Meadows Trail

Cavell Meadows Trail is a day hike in Jasper National Park from the end of Cavell Road, built around the Mount Edith Cavell area. The route starts along the Path of the Glacier Trail on a paved section, then turns hard left onto the Cavell Meadows route climbing into upper-subalpine forest and up toward treeline.

The trail is described as moderately steep but well-graded for most of its length, with an upper section that can be wet and prone to damage early in the season. By mid-July it’s commonly possible to count on a colorful display of mountain wildflowers in the upper sections; staying on-trail is important to protect fragile tundra.

On the way up, you’re guided past the bouldery moraine and into areas where small mammals are often spotted among rocks. The forest-to-treeline transition is where the route angles and starts the looping section back down to rejoin itself at the forest edge.

The upper meadow loop places you in the alpine region beyond treeline, with the route designed around a climb into the meadow area and a return loop. Expect more fragile ground off the designated line—this is not the place to cut corners around the tundra.

This is also a managed landscape with specific glacier-related hazards: you should not approach the Angel Glacier or go to Cavell Pond’s edge beneath it. Ice can fall frequently from the glacier, and there are signs and safety closures in place around unstable areas.

For timing, the Cavell Meadows Trail is set up as a summer hike when conditions are dry enough to prevent trail damage; it’s commonly used July through September. Plan for a 6–7 km return day hike with about 500 m of elevation gain and roughly 3–5 hours on the trail.
