Convict Creek Trail

Convict Creek Trail is an out-and-back hiking route in California’s Eastern Sierra that starts at the Convict Lake Trailhead near Mammoth Lakes and climbs into the John Muir Wilderness toward Mildred Lake. The commonly described round-trip distance is about 9.3 miles, with roughly 2,326 ft of elevation gain.

From the west side of the Convict Lake loop, the trail runs south after leaving the lake area, cutting into a rugged mountain basin. After about a mile it enters the John Muir Wilderness and then continues along Convict Creek.

The ascent follows Convict Creek upward through steep, rugged terrain. The route is aimed at reaching Mildred Lake; stronger parties can continue past Mildred toward higher lakes such as Lake Dorothy, and onward in the same general drainage toward Lake Genevieve and Edith Lake.

The Mammoth Lakes Trail System describes Convict Creek Trail as about 7.1 miles to Mildred Lake, adding that you reach Mildred after roughly five miles and then have the option to continue climbing toward Lake Dorothy (noted at 10,275 ft) before linking toward Lake Genevieve and Edith Lake.

Expect a strenuous, high-altitude hike with exposure during the climb. Typical planning estimates put the full round trip in the 5.5–6 hour range, depending on pace and how far beyond Mildred you go.

Timing and access: the recommended hiking window is July through October. The route passes through a wilderness area, and if you plan on backpacking or overnight camping, wilderness permits are required; dogs are permitted on a leash.

One recurring trip-management issue is the Convict Creek bridge crossing, which can be out and can be difficult or unsafe during heavy spring snowmelt.
