CT - Rock Creek Gorge Trail

CT - Rock Creek Gorge Trail is a rugged lollipop loop on the Justin P. Wilson Cumberland Trail in Sale Creek, Tennessee, built around a deep descent into Rock Creek Gorge and a return via the Rock Creek Loop and Leggett Point spur. The full loop is about 14.2 miles; many hikers do shorter out-and-back options (for example, ~5.4 miles one-way) depending on time and logistics.

Plan on a strenuous hike: it’s rated hard/strenuous (about 8/10) and typically takes around 6.5 hours for the full loop. Expect a steep drop into the gorge—then the hard work comes again when you climb out of Rock Creek Gorge on the return leg.

One of the defining crossings is Rock Creek via an 80-foot steel footbridge. Near the bridge area, the route includes a steep wooden ladder and steep rock-stair descents to reach the bridge, followed by continued travel within the gorge corridor.

The loop brings you into a section with multiple branch crossings and seasonal water. Leggett Branch Cascades are on the route on the way out of the gorge area, and the trail also passes other named wooden bridges (including Rocky Branch Bridge, Flat Branch Bridge, and Boiling Spring Branch Bridge) over seasonally active drainages.

For viewpoint payoffs, the trail system links with the Leggett Point Overlook Trail (yellow spur to Leggett Point). The overlook opens a panoramic view back over Rock Creek Gorge, and it’s a common spot to spot birds such as hawks and eagles when conditions allow.

A big theme along this section is old-growth forest character and gorge habitats—dense rhododendron thickets on some stretches, plus spring wildflowers in the Rock Creek Gorge area (mountain laurel, lady slipper, dwarf crested iris, bluets, and others).

Weather sensitivity matters on this route. Some creek crossings can be very slippery during wet season, so take extra care where the trail dips to branches and where you’re forced to step across wet-weather rock and shallow flow areas.

Common trailhead access for the CT - Rock Creek Gorge Trail loop uses Retro Hughes Trailhead and connections to Leggett Road trailheads; the common “full loop” structure combines those access points with the Rock Creek Loop and the Leggett Point spur.
