Doubletop Trail
Doubletop Trail is a long-distance hiking route in Baxter State Park that climbs Doubletop Mountain via either the north side or the south side to reach the twin peaks. The climb combines an easy walk through forest with steeper, rocky scrambling above the treeline and open, exposed cliff areas near the top.
Expect two main ways up: a north approach from Nesowadnehunk Field Campground to the peaks, or a south approach from Kidney Pond. Both options lead to the South Peak and North Peak area; the North Peak offers views toward Katahdin and the Cross Range, while the South Peak provides broad views in multiple directions.
The trail is about 3.4 to 4.8 miles one-way depending on which side you start from, with a typical round-trip time of about 3 to 4.5 hours. It’s best treated as strenuous because of the steep sections and rock scrambling near the summit area.
On the north side, the route crosses Nesowadnehunk Stream early and then follows the old tote road before beginning the more rugged climb toward the peaks. On the south side, the approach provides access to the South Peak.
Near the top, scrambling and cliffside exposure make footing a key concern—wet conditions increase how tricky the upper scramble can be, and there are places where you’ll want to stay back from cliff edges.
Trailhead parking is limited at the main access points such as Kidney Pond and Nesowadnehunk Field, and park access rules apply for entering the park and for day-use capacity during peak periods.
Baxter State Park prohibits pets, and bicycling is not part of the Doubletop Trail itself (it’s a designated hiking route).
