Duck Pass Trail
Duck Pass Trail is a long-distance hike in the John Muir Wilderness near Mammoth Lakes, California, climbing from the Coldwater Campground area over Duck Pass and onward to the John Muir Trail.
The trail leaves behind Coldwater Campground and climbs through the Coldwater Creek watershed. It passes Arrowhead Lake, Skelton Lake, and Barney Lake before going over Duck Pass.
From the pass, the route joins the John Muir Trail. Common destinations in the Duck Pass aftermath include Duck Lake and then Pika Lake, with Purple Lake further along.
This is a day-hike–capable route but also used for overnight trips; wilderness permits are required for overnight backpacking, while day use does not require a permit.
Expect a steep push early and a sustained climb. Plans often target a round-trip of about 8 miles to the top of the pass, or about 9.5 miles to reach Pika/Duck Lake.
The climb and turnaround choice drive elevation gain, with estimates around 1,600–2,300 ft depending on how far you go (pass-only vs. going to Duck/Pika).
Start high and stay organized: water from creeks, lakes, and springs should be treated before drinking, and food/scented items must be stored in bear-proof containers. Campfire rules restrict fires near certain areas and at elevations above 10,000 ft.
