Elbow Valley Trail

Elbow Valley Trail is an easy long-distance hiking route through Kananaskis Country west of Calgary, following the Elbow River corridor for long stretches. The route is used as an out-and-back hike, with the option to extend by linking to Sulphur Springs for a longer loop.

Typical trail character is dirt singletrack and path through a mix of forest and open river-valley terrain. The corridor passes through areas described for forests, aspen groves, and river canyon sections along the Elbow Valley.

The trail is positioned along the north side of Highway 66 through the Kananaskis Country Public Land Use Zone, and it also ties into the broader Elbow Valley trail network. On the east and west sides it connects with other named valley routes, including Diamond T Loop trail (west of Station Flats) and Powderface Day Use.

For planning and navigation, expect multiple valley junctions along the route; it’s smart to hike with a map and follow junction signage to stay on Elbow Valley Trail through the valley.

Parking in Kananaskis Country requires a Kananaskis Conservation Pass. Trail access is described by starting across Highway 66 from the Paddy’s Flat Campground, then hiking into the Elbow Valley corridor.

Dogs are permitted on leash on the Elbow Valley Trail.
