Fern Lake Trail
Fern Lake Trail is a moderate, long-distance out-and-back hike in Rocky Mountain National Park that follows the Big Thompson River corridor.
Expect a steady climb from the Moraine Park area toward Fern Lake, with the big-ticket payoff areas along the way including The Pool, Fern Falls, and Fern Lake itself.
The Pool sits about 1.7 miles from the trailhead where the Big Thompson River is joined by Fern Creek; it’s a common turnaround-for-a-halfday or a natural early rest stop.
Fern Falls is roughly mid-hike and is called out as a major reward on the route; the trail climbs through a steeper section after The Pool toward the falls.
Fern Lake sits below treeline at about 9,527 feet and is reached after continuing past Fern Falls; the route terminates at the lake’s shore for views of Notchtop Mountain and nearby peaks.
Cultural history is part of the route story: the trail is associated with early park tourism and later Civilian Conservation Corps–era construction, and historic lodge/cabin sites at The Pool and at Fern Lake have since been lost to time and fire damage.
Access and logistics tie to the Bear Lake corridor: the trail starts in the Moraine Park area off Bear Lake Road, with limited parking; the area is also served by the park’s free hiker shuttle option during many seasons.
Dogs are not allowed on this trail; it’s mapped as foot travel only, with no motor vehicles on the route.
