Hiking route

Franey Trail is a Cape Breton Highlands National Park loop hike near Ingonish, built around a steep climb through Acadian-to-boreal forest to a summit viewpoint at about 423 m. It’s the kind of route where your effort goes into getting high enough for wide, cliff-edge lookouts over the Clyburn Brook canyon and the Atlantic coastline from Cape Smokey to Ingonish.

Expect a difficult hiking experience driven by the initial ascent and rugged sections. The route includes a lower-loop option (4.5 km) and a longer full loop (13 km), so you can choose how much steep, sustained climbing you want to commit to.

From the top, there are large rocks used as rest spots and a set of Parks Canada red Adirondack chairs for the main photo stop. The viewpoints look down the valley (with the river threading through below) and back toward the rocky face of Franey Mountain.

On the loop, the main climbing direction is generally handled on one leg, while the other side provides the longer continuous descent back toward the parking area. The trail has a recently realigned layout into two scenic loops rather than a single fixed length.

Trailheads and access are straightforward: park at the end of Franey Road in the new parking lot, then reach the trailhead by turning off the Cabot Trail just north of the Clyburn River and following the fire access road about 1 km to the gravel parking area.

Plan around Parks Canada entry requirements and tight parking—trail parking fills fast during the day, with peak pressure between about 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Day-use hours align with the usual summer hiking window (mid-May to mid-October), and services are not the same outside that season.

Wildlife presence is part of the reality here, with moose commonly seen in the area. Keep distance, don’t approach or feed animals, and be especially mindful near the steep cliff areas close to the summit viewpoints.
