Fremont National Recreation Trail

Fremont National Recreation Trail (also known as Oregon Timber Trail) is a long-distance hiking route in the Fremont-Winema National Forest, running north to south through south-central Oregon.

The route spans roughly 135–140 miles overall and is broken into two main sections separated by about 13 miles of rural highway. Expect a rugged, self-reliant hike with basic navigation needs and careful water planning.

The northern section starts at Yamsay Mountain and heads south over Hager Mountain, then follows Winter Rim toward the Warner Mountains where it meets the Crane Mountain National Recreation Trail #161.

From that Warner Mountains junction, the FNRT either continues north on Fremont National Recreation Trail #160 toward Vee Lake or stays with the Fremont National Recreation Trail path south toward its Cox Pass area near Lakeview, OR.

Several mapped access points sit near towns and trailheads along the way—near Silver Lake, Summer Lake, and Paisley (for mid-route entry), and near Cox Pass (for the northern end).

The middle-to-southern portion runs along the crest of the northern Warner Mountains, and local conditions can vary widely by season and segment; some Winter Rim-area stretches may be hard to distinguish due to past fire and beetle impacts.

The trail is open to hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Water is extremely limited and unreliable, with the need to treat non-potable water and plan around seasonal sources/springs.
