Fundy Footpath

The Fundy Footpath is a continuous, multi-day hike along the Bay of Fundy coast in New Brunswick, using the Fundy Trail Provincial Park connection at Goose River/Fundy National Park on one end and reaching the Big Salmon River area near St. Martins on the other. The route distance is about 68.34 km on this dataset (with other published summaries describing a roughly 41 km coastal footpath plus additional Goose River approach distance).

Expect an “extremely strenuous” wilderness outing with heavy elevation change, dense forest, and frequent tough footing. It’s typically described as taking about 3 to 5 days for most hikers, with primitive backcountry travel throughout rather than a casual day hike.

Water movement is a defining constraint: you must plan around tidal timing for river and creek crossings. The route is known for tidal river crossings (including Goose River and Little Salmon River in common planning references), where safe timing depends on local tide conditions rather than only trail logistics.

Route navigation is part of the work. The trail uses white blazes, but river/creek approaches and crossings can temporarily remove or obscure the blazes—so expect periods where you need to manage navigation carefully rather than just follow markings blindly.

The route runs through both forested and beach surfaces. Camp options are spread along the way as backcountry sites, and the trail has at least some designated camping locations in the National Park portion; some campsite policies may require planning beyond simply showing up at any location.

Trail management and upkeep rely on volunteers: the Fundy Footpath and its campsites are maintained by volunteer effort, and hikers are asked to help keep the route clean.

Historically, the Fundy Footpath has roots in earlier blazed routes that fell out of use, then was re-established by volunteers and formally opened in 1994 under the Fundy Hiking Trail Association framework. For full-trail planning, a guidebook is commonly treated as essential gear because it includes waterproof topo detail and section-by-section safety and preparation information.
