Gibraltar Chute

1 photo

An excellent pitch of steep skiing next to a receding ice cliff provides a more direct route down from the Ingraham Glacier.

The Gibraltar Chute offers an classic descent down an obvious ramp of snow visible from the path to Camp Muir. As the neighboring Nisqually Ice Cliff has melted back, the serac danger threatening this route has gotten less severe, though it remains an active zone for ice and rock fall hazard.

Diverging at Camp Comfort from the more traveled Ingraham-Direct, the Gib Chute route traverses in under Gibraltar Rock before committing down the fall-line of the massive and sustained feature. Care must be taken to cross the substantial bergshrunds at the bottom of the chute, where parties can choose from an easy traverse back to the Muir Snowfield or continuing their descent down the rolls of the Nisqually Glacier.
