Gila River Trail #724

Gila River Trail #724 is a one-way long-distance hike in the Gila Wilderness, following the Gila River from the Gila River Trailhead into canyon bottom terrain toward Turkey Creek Trailhead. The route is primarily river-adjacent, so your timing and footing are tied to what the river is doing day to day.

Expect frequent river crossings; the hike is often treated as a “wet hike.” Plan for wet feet and possible deep or swift water, especially during spring runoff or after monsoon rains, and remember that a crossing that feels manageable can become unsafe as water levels rise quickly.

Most of the trail is designated for non-motorized, non-mechanized use and stays within the Gila Wilderness for nearly its entire length. Pack in Leave No Trace discipline (and plan to have a wilderness map handy for route-finding), since this is not a constructed, accessibility-oriented trail.

Water availability is limited and is described as coming from streams/springs; water quality is not tested, so filter or treat water you collect. Because river conditions drive both safety and hydration planning, carry backup water planning rather than assuming every crossing will be your last usable one.

Navigation and tread can vary: leafy vegetation such as clover grows quickly and can obscure cairns and tread, particularly in summer. Give extra attention near where the trail crosses the river to avoid drifting off-line as vegetation thickens over the season.

Logistics: there is no fee for use of the trail. Closest services are in Silver City (about 38 miles from the Gila River Trailhead) for fuel/food/lodging/medical needs, and permits are required only for commercial or organized uses.
