Grande Traversata delle Alpi

Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) is a Piedmont-based long-distance hiking trail that runs the arc of the western Alps from the Swiss side down toward Ventimiglia on the Mediterranean. It’s laid out as roughly 55 day-stages for multi-week thru-hiking, with transverse valleys along the way to connect high-lying communities.

Expect a strenuous day-to-day profile: the route is built around crossing high passes and dropping into valleys almost continuously, and it accumulates very large climbing totals over the whole trek (around 54,000–57,000+ meters ascent depending on the reference). The character is long-distance trekking rather than technical climbing—no mountaineering gear is implied, but good conditioning and surefootedness matter for exposed pass terrain.

The GTA can be walked either direction; the classic planning flow is north-to-south. It’s primarily in Piedmont, and the route avoids the Aosta Valley as a core part of the traverse, keeping the line within the western Alpine arc that frames the region.

Accommodation is typically structured by overnight stops tied to the stages: mountain huts/refuges and village lodging (posto tappa) at the end of each day. Hikers generally aim stage-to-stage, using the stage endpoints for food and beds rather than carrying everything for independent camping across the whole traverse.

For route logistics and navigation, the GTA is normally marked with red-and-white waymarking; some markers include “GTA” or “SI”. Trail finding can get harder in larger towns, where the long-distance marking isn’t always immediately obvious compared with the rural stretches.

Timing is a key part of planning the GTA. The long-distance route is usually snow-free by late June/early July, and it’s commonly hiked through summer into late September; later-season weather and closures can start to limit hut/posto tappa availability. In the intended high season (mid-summer), the trail is typically accessible in the full thru-hike sense of being supported by regular end-of-stage lodging.
