Green Mountain Trail #782
Green Mountain Trail #782 is a long-distance hike in Washington’s Glacier Peak Wilderness that follows a steep, dusty climb out of forest and into open meadows before continuing up toward Green Mountain Lookout.
In the early stretch, the trail runs through mixed forest and then transitions into old growth; just past about the first mile it enters the Glacier Peak Wilderness. The route continues climbing steadily, with a brief hardening of terrain as it approaches the high country switchbacks.
Around 2.5 miles, at roughly 5,200 ft, the climb drops down to two small tarns. Just below that area are a backcountry toilet and camping sites; use only designated campsites with fire rings.
After the tarns and rest/gear-up point, the route turns back into a steep push on remaining switchbacks toward the lookout. Marmots are common on the steep slopes and meadows as hikers move higher.
Green Mountain Lookout is a historic fire lookout on the summit. The current structure’s history includes Civilian Conservation Corps construction of an L-4 cab in 1933 and later rehabilitation work after damage and disassembly/move work following heavy snows; it has also been involved in periodic closure/management decisions and restoration timelines.
For planning and access, it’s commonly approached via Suiattle River Road (FS Road 26) and Forest Service Road 2680 (Green Mountain Road). Trailhead parking is limited, so avoid blocking the turnaround. A Northwest Forest Pass (Trail Pass) is required for entry.
