Gros Morne Mountain Trail

Gros Morne Mountain Trail is a 17 km, day-hike route in Gros Morne National Park built around two very different segments: the 9 km Approach Trail out to the viewing platform at the base, then the 8 km Summit Trail loop over the arctic-alpine plateau and back down through Ferry Gulch.

The Approach Trail (9 km return) follows Crow Gulch Brook and climbs gradually through forest toward the base. It’s the easier half of the hike (still a full workout given the overall distance) and is a common turnaround point for people who don’t continue to the summit.

From the viewing platform, the Summit Trail starts with a steep, scree-slope climb of roughly 500 m. After topping out, the route traverses the rocky summit plateau and then descends via a long, boulder-strewn line through Ferry Gulch.

Plan on a total hiking time of about 6–8.5 hours for the full route. The official loop is typically done in a clockwise direction because descending the scree slope is considered higher-risk than climbing it.

Seasonality is strict: the Gros Morne Summit trail portion is closed to hikers annually from May 1 until it re-opens June 28 (protecting wildlife during critical growth and reproduction weeks). The full mountain hike is generally targeted for the ice-free summer-to-early-fall window starting June 28.

The mountaintop is exposed and can sit in cloud, with poor visibility when that happens. The summit environment is harsh Arctic-alpine terrain; expect significant wind and colder conditions than at the base.

Water and navigation preparation matter because conditions can change quickly and assistance can be slow. Bring at least 3 liters of water per person, start early enough to finish before dark, and carry a way to handle delays (flashlight/extra batteries).

Dogs are strongly discouraged on the mountain section due to wildlife disturbance and the rocky terrain; if you hike with one, keep it leashed and under physical control at all times and be prepared for the rules apply to the mountain access you’re using.
