Helms Meadow Trail

Helms Meadow Trail (Trail 27E56) is a ~7.8-mile hiking route in the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness of the Sierra National Forest, starting from the D2 Helms Meadow trailhead. The route is part of the broader Helms Meadow area network and links into the Nelson Lake area and the Dinkey Lakes Loop/First Dinkey Lake connections.

Use this trail for a long day push or a point-to-point backpacking segment through sub-alpine forest and high country terrain. The trail is managed for standard ground trail use (not a paved surface), with dirt as the mapped tread type.

The main hiking line intersects other named routes around Helms Meadow, including the Frazier Trail near the lake, the Nelson Lake Trail, and it eventually connects onward toward Dinkey Lakes Loop and First Dinkey Lake. Common destinations along the corridor include Helms Creek, Helms Meadow, Nelson Lakes, Cliff Lake, and First Dinkey Lake.

If you’re building a longer itinerary, it can also be combined into a loop using the Cliff Lake Trailhead (a ~13.3-mile loop option is commonly paired with this corridor).

Seasonality matters here: the typical window is June through October (snow conditions permitting), and winter/spring access can be limited by seasonal road conditions that affect getting to trailheads.

Overnight travel requires a wilderness permit, with wilderness permit reservations available via Recreation.gov; trailhead quotas are in place year-round. Plan for backcountry food storage rules and restrictions like “no campfires above 10,000 ft.”

Length and effort: the route is often described as moderate to challenging, with difficulty varying by the specific itinerary connections you choose (out-and-back versus loop).
