Hunt Lake Trail

Hunt Lake Trail is a day-hike out-and-back in Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba, with a total length of about 12.6 km. The route is designed around moving from the Hunt Lake side into the West Hawk Lake area and back out the same way.

Expect rugged walking with a “moderate to difficult” feel: steep climbs, exposed rock/rough granite in places, and traction-challenging sections including tree roots and slippery spots. It typically takes about 3 to 5 hours to complete at a steady hiking pace.

The first part follows cedar groves alongside Hunt Lake, keeping you close to the shoreline as the trail begins to build. As you continue, the route shifts north to the eastern ridge of West Hawk Lake, where the trail character changes to more drops and rock features.

Along the West Hawk Lake ridge you’ll encounter steep drop-offs to the lake and prominent granite outcrops, plus elevated views over the water. Plan on spending extra time here if footing slows you down on uneven rock.

The official turnaround is at Little Indian Bay, marked by a wooden shelter. From there you retrace your steps back toward the start near the Border Reception Centre parking lot off Highway 1 at the Manitoba–Ontario border.
