Hiking route

Jatbula Trail is a full-pack, multi-day bushwalk in Nitmiluk National Park, Northern Territory. The route runs from Nitmiluk Gorge to Leliyn (Edith Falls) and covers about 62 km, typically finished in 5–6 days with an overnight each day at established campsites along the line.

The walking follows parts of an ancient Jawoyn songline and stays on the Arnhem Land Escarpment’s western edge for much of the traverse. Expect a mix of sandstone plateaus and woodlands, plus monsoon-forest patches and creek country.

Terrain is remote and uneven, and the route is mapped and managed as grade 4 (medium to difficult). Walkers should be fit and active with experience hiking rough ground while carrying a backpack weighing at least 15 kg.

The dry-season window is critical: the track is only open during the dry season, generally from June through September. Bookings are essential because numbers are restricted for the walk and camps.

Day-by-day, the classic traverse is: Day 1 Nitmiluk Gorge to Biddlecombe Cascades (8.3 km); Day 2 Biddlecombe Cascades to Crystal Falls (11 km); Day 3 Crystal Falls to 17 Mile Falls (10 km).

On the later days you work deeper into the Edith River catchment: Day 4 17 Mile Falls to Sandy Camp (16.8 km); Day 5 Sandy Camp to Sweetwater Pool (11.1 km); Day 6 Sweetwater Pool to Leliyn (Edith Falls) (4.5 km).

Camps are set up near water features—springs, cascades, and plunging waterfalls—with frequent opportunities for swimming in the pools reached along the route.
