Kailash Kora

Kailash Kora (冈仁波齐转山) is the classic long-distance circumambulation around Mount Kailash in western Tibet, done as a multi-day high-altitude trek with a highest point at Dolma La Pass (about 5,630 m / 18,471 ft). The commonly planned outer circuit is roughly 52 km and is typically completed in 2–3 days.

The route itinerary centers on three main legs: Darchen to Dirapuk, Dirapuk to Zutulpuk (over Dolma La Pass), and Zutulpuk back to Darchen. This makes Day 2 the demanding segment, because you climb to the pass and then descend to the next monastery camp area.

Expect sustained altitude challenge rather than technical difficulty: even when the trail itself is not described as highly technical, the second-day ascent and the altitude above 5,600 m make the pace slow and recovery important. The pass area is known for harsh conditions, including cold and possible snow outside of ideal weather windows.

Most planning revolves around acclimatization and trip timing. The trekking season runs from May to October, and preparation is critical because acute mountain sickness risk is treated as serious for this kind of high pass hiking.

Cultural logistics matter on Kailash Kora: independent travel is not permitted in the region, so you must arrange a guide and permits through a certified Tibetan travel agency to secure the necessary permissions and local arrangements for the circuit.

For lodging and support, the typical pattern is monastery guesthouses and tent-camp style accommodation near the main rest stops on the circuit, with supplies commonly purchased or topped up at Darchen or along the way at these stopovers.

If you’re still deciding how to pace the outer circuit, treat the itinerary as a deliberate sequence of climb–descent days rather than trying to “race” the pass day; the route’s main stress point is the Dolma La day. Build in enough time for symptoms management and keep early starts conservative on ascent days.

Weather adds an important layer to field strategy: because snow and cold are possible, avoid waiting until you’re already wet-cold at the pass. When precipitation hits, re-check clothing and insulation choices so you don’t get chilled while climbing high, where conditions can turn quickly.
