Kidapawan Trail (also known as Mandarangan Trail) is a hard, long-distance hiking route that serves as a classic approach for reaching the summit of Mt. Apo in the Mt. Apo Natural Park area. It is generally regarded as a strenuous trek with substantial time on the move and demanding ascent terrain near the top.

The route starts near Lake Agco and heads toward the Kidapawan side of Mt. Apo. Expect changing trail character on the way up: forested hiking that transitions into more open/grassy sections closer to Lake Venado, plus varied ground that can include muddy stretches after wet weather.

On the approach and mid/upper sections, the trail is known for several distinctive encounters: river crossings (including Marble River), sulfur-influenced areas such as sulfur-rich fumarole/sulfur vents, and mossy forest terrain. As the hike progresses, the climbing becomes more technical and physically punishing.

A key part of the hardest challenge is the summit-side ascent, which includes steep ladder sections and boulder fields. Breathing can become difficult for some hikers in zones with sulfurous fumes from the dormant volcano, so plan for a slow, steady pace and enough time to move through the roughest stretches.

The common plan places Lake Venado as a major overnight/turnaround target en route to the final summit attack. Multiple itineraries camp at or near Lake Venado before continuing toward the summit, then use the Kidapawan corridor as either an ascent or an exit option depending on the traverse plan.

Because Mt. Apo is within a highly regulated protected area, permits and guides are mandatory. Arrangements must be handled locally through the Kidapawan/park management process (often via the Kidapawan City Tourism Office or the Protected Area Management Board), and your trip should be built around that administrative requirement.

Typical itinerary timing places the overall trekking effort in the roughly 10–12 hour range for the strenuous out-and-back/through-hike format associated with this route family, and it is commonly managed as a multi-day Mt. Apo summit program (often 3D2N) when combined with a traverse using other trail legs.
