La Grande Traversée - Sentier International des Appalaches SIA-IAT
La Grande Traversée – Sentier International des Appalaches SIA-IAT is the hard alpine section of the International Appalachian Trail in Quebec’s Gaspésie National Park. It’s a point-to-point trek aimed at experienced hikers who can handle long days on rugged high ground.
Expect a long itinerary (about 99.5 km / 61.8 mi) with very heavy elevation gain—over 4,000 m (13,946 ft)—and a high-peaks route that includes summits such as Mont Albert, Mont Logan, Mont Xalibu, and Mont Jacques-Cartier.
Route planning is tied to the park’s backcountry management: you need to reserve backcountry wilderness sites and huts in advance via Reservotron SIAQCGR, since it’s a strictly managed national-park route.
Season and conditions matter. The usual hiking window runs roughly from June through October, and you should assume the terrain spans subarctic alpine conditions, where weather can turn quickly.
Because this is a wilderness hike in a national park setting, pack out all waste—there are no trash facilities at wilderness sites.
