Laguna Esmeralda Trail

Laguna Esmeralda Trail (Sendero Laguna Esmeralda) is a day hike from the Tierra Mayor area near Ushuaia that runs to a glacial lagoon in the Fuegian Andes. The route is a round trip of about 11.5 km with a moderate hiking tier.

This hike has a distinctive wet-terrain character: lenga forest walking gives way to peat bog and consistently muddy ground. Expect slippery sections and soft footing to be a bigger issue than steep climbing.

Route navigation is typically straightforward once you’re on the marked trail; in the forest it’s still important to stay on the blue-marked line. Much of the path is used seasonally, and the itinerary is set up as a go-and-return day plan.

Approach goes in via National Route 3 from Ushuaia to the Valle Tierra Mayor reserve area; the trail is accessed from there (about 18 km from Ushuaia). The main valley/forest-to-peat-to-lagoon progression is what defines the day.

Terrain rises toward a high-mountain environment before reaching the lagoon basin. The lagoon’s greenish color is tied to sediment carried from the Ojo del Albino Glacier, visible once you reach the water.

A key practical detail is how you cross the peat: boardwalks are used over peat bogs on the route to reduce damage and to make travel possible without sinking. Even with boardwalks, the surrounding wet ground means you still need waterproof boots and traction.

Seasonality matters for timing and conditions: during autumn/winter, daylight drops and trails can be icy or snowy. The recommended cutoff is earlier in colder months, so plan a conservative start for a same-day return.
