Mantario Trail

Mantario Trail is a ~58.93 km end-to-end backcountry hike through Whiteshell Provincial Park in eastern Manitoba, with the route running close to the Ontario border for much of its length.

This is a multipurpose Canadian Shield route on granite outcrops, boreal forest, and peat-bog country. Expect repeated steep ups/downs between granite ridges and boggy lowlands, plus frequent wet crossings on logs and beaver-dam-style links.

Typical planning targets are 3–4 days for most backpackers, and the trip is commonly treated as a long-distance hike for experienced, well-prepared travelers due to uneven terrain, technical navigation demands, and primitive camps.

The south trailhead is off Provincial Road 312 east of Caddy Lake, and the north trailhead is on the north shore of Big Whiteshell Lake at the end of the Block 2 road off Provincial Road 309. Logistics usually mean a vehicle drop at both ends or a shuttle between trailheads.

The trail is divided between a south segment that crosses two sets of railway tracks and a set of power transmission lines and a Wilderness Zone section protected from motorized access and hunting. A small portion also enters Crown Land in Ontario.

There are 10 designated primitive backcountry campsites along the route. Each campsite includes a steel fire pit and bear-resistant food storage boxes, plus basic toilet facilities.

A reliable way to stay oriented is to follow the trail markers/cairns; route-finding is a real part of the experience, and spring thaw or recent rainfall can change how passable bog and water features are.
