Massanutten South Trail

Massanutten South Trail is a long-distance, orange-blazed hike in Virginia’s George Washington National Forest, part of the Massanutten Trail system. It’s built around steep, rugged climbing with rocky footing rather than a smooth tread.

A common way to do this route is the out-and-back run toward Yellow Cliffs Mountain Overlook (near Bird Knob). Expect the climb to get rocky and technical as you push past the early forest section.

Early on, the route starts as a moderately ascending forest walk for roughly the first 1.6 miles. That initial stretch is generally easier to settle into, but foot placement still matters on the uneven surface.

Around the 1.6-mile area, Massanutten South Trail merges with Browns Hollow Trail (salmon-blazed). Stay on the correct line by continuing right when you’re at that junction.

As the route approaches the overlook area, the trail is described as steep and highly rugged, with enough rock scramble to slow steady hikers. Plan on taking time at the rocky overlook spur and flats before turning around.

Because this is typically an out-and-back to a specific viewpoint, the return retraces the rugged sections you climbed. If conditions are wet or recently leaf-covered, scout your footing and committed moves before you step onto slick rock.
