Matthews Head Trail

Matthews Head Trail is a 4.5 km loop in Fundy National Park, New Brunswick. Plan on about 1.5 to 2 hours on the marked trail.

The route blends coastal terrain with cultural history. After starting from the Herring Cove Road parking area, the walking crosses fields that transition into regenerating forest.

A section on an old wagon road leads down toward the remnants of a 19th-century homestead tied to Ellen and Tom Matthews (settled in 1865, with the farm abandoned around 1910).

Expect short changes in terrain that make the loop feel harder than its length. A steep section is called out on park materials, and there’s a short side route that reaches viewpoints over the Bay of Fundy.

For navigation and route completion: follow the loop through a portion of the Coastal trail, including backtracking to the intersection after the side route before finishing the circuit.

At the lookout, the red rock formation is described as Hopewell conglomerate—linked to the same type of rock found at Hopewell Rocks far to the east in New Brunswick.
