McKnight Canyon Trail #92
McKnight Canyon Trail #92 is a short backcountry hiking route in the Gila National Forest near Hanover/Mimbres, New Mexico. It’s mapped as a long-distance trail with a one-way feel and is commonly planned as an out-and-back.
The trip distance is about 5 miles one-way (roughly 10 miles round-trip) with about 370 feet of elevation gain. The route drops off Kelly Mesa and descends into McKnight Canyon.
Most of the travel follows sandy washes and benches above the water, with frequent creek crossings along the way. Expect sections that alternate between moving in dry wash tread and getting close to the flowing creek.
Terrain is shaped by wildfire and flooding impacts in the canyon. Parts of the route pass through higher-intensity burn and flood debris areas, so you’ll need to stay alert for altered tread and messy footing.
Recent clearing and volunteer maintenance has been reported for the first ~2.7 miles, but the rest of the canyon remains a place where conditions can change quickly. Plan your turnaround with that in mind.
Water risk matters on this canyon route: flash flooding is a known hazard. Don’t attempt the canyon if rain is forecast.
Access is described from Highway 35 by turning onto Forest Road 151 (not FR 152, and not the road up toward the Mimbres side). The trailhead is on Kelly Mesa.
The trail is used for hiking and horseback riding; mountain biking is not recommended/allowed for this route as mapped.
