Meysan Lakes Trail
Meysan Lakes Trail is a steep, strenuous long-distance hike in the John Muir Wilderness that runs from just above Whitney Portal Group Campground to Meysan Lake, with the trail providing access to climbing routes on Lone Pine Peak. The Forest Service lists the one-way distance to Meysan Lake as about 5.6 miles and the elevation gain as about 3,100 feet; the route is infrequently maintained and becomes harder to follow near Meysan Lake.
Plan this as a sustained climb: the route starts above Whitney Portal Group Campground, then works uphill toward the basin and the final approach to Meysan Lake. Expect the character to shift as you near the destination, where the tread can fade and navigation becomes more involved.
Near the top, the trail becomes less obvious and harder to stay on. Approaching Meysan Lake typically requires careful route-finding using the small markers that mark the intended line when the official tread weakens.
Camping and regulations are tied to overnight use in the John Muir Wilderness. A wilderness permit is required year round for overnight trips; day use does not require a permit.
Bear country rules are enforced around Whitney Portal. Store all food, trash, and scented items in bear-proof containers, and follow the posted storage guidance for counterbalancing when containers aren’t used; no campfires are allowed.
Water is available from creeks, lakes, and springs, but treat any water before drinking.
