Middle Head Trail

Middle Head Trail is a Cape Breton Highlands National Park day hike that follows a long, narrow peninsula separating two ocean bays and finishing on headland cliffs above the Atlantic. The route is mapped as a short loop/return hike centered on Ingonish on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

Expect mostly low elevation change (about 10–55 m) and a generally moderate walking effort: mostly level tread with some climbs, plus rocky/rugged stretches and exposed tree roots. The trail’s character shifts between forested sections and open coastal sections as you work your way along the peninsula.

At the furthest end, there’s an interpretive loop tied to the route’s coastal and cultural setting. Along the shoreline corridor, the hike is timed for coastal encounters—often with seabirds, seals, whales, eagles, and occasional fishing boats in early summer.

The trailhead is just beyond Keltic Lodge in Ingonish (civic address: 383 Keltic Inn Road, Ingonish). Plan for a park access requirement: a Cape Breton Highlands National Park entry pass is required to hike or use other services in the park.

Season and planning are straightforward but time-box the logistics: the park is open year-round, while full visitor services run mid-May to mid-October. If you need passes or visitor safety/trail location information, check in at the Parks Canada visitor centres in Chéticamp or Ingonish.

Coastal weather changes quickly here, so pack for wind and shifting conditions even on short outings. Where the trail runs exposed near the cliffs and plateau edges, a light rain or fog can make footing feel different, especially on the rocky, rooted sections.

Bring water for the length of the loop/return hike and consider insect repellent—black flies and mosquitoes are common in summer. Stay on designated trails and boardwalks to protect fragile vegetation, and avoid approaching or disturbing wildlife.
