Midstate Trail

Midstate Trail is a 92-mile (148 km) north-to-south long-distance hiking route in Worcester County, Massachusetts. It runs from the Rhode Island border in Douglas State Forest to the New Hampshire line on Mount Watatic, where it connects with the Wapack Trail.

The trail is marked with yellow blazes and generally rates easy, but it includes occasional steep and rugged sections along the corridor.

Expect a mix of shaded woodland paths and rural walking, with occasional glacial-pond and lake-adjacent terrain, plus state parks and other protected parcels that keep the route feeling rural even though Massachusetts’s towns sit nearby.

Two high points anchor many full or partial hikes: Mount Wachusett and Mount Watatic. Mount Wachusett is the highest point on the trail (2,006 ft / 611 m).

Most hikers do it as a multi-day backpacking trip, commonly planned over 3–5 days, with frequent options to break the route into manageable day hikes.

The Midstate Trail corridor passes through a string of towns—Douglas, Sutton, Oxford, Charlton, Spencer, Leicester, Oakham, Rutland, Barre, Hubbardston, Princeton, Westminster, Ashburnham, and Ashby—so resupply and trailhead access tend to be relatively straightforward compared with remote backcountry routes.
