Midstate Trail
Midstate Trail is a 92-mile (148 km) long-distance hiking path running north to south through Worcester County, Massachusetts. It connects the Rhode Island border with the New Hampshire line on Mount Watatic, where it links to the Wapack Trail.
In the middle of the route, expect a mix of woodland footpaths and short road segments, with sections that can be steeper or rougher than the overall rating. It’s generally easy hiking, though there are moderately difficult parts.
The highest ground on the full trail is Mount Wachusett (2,006 ft / 611 m), and the trail’s northern anchor is Mount Watatic. The corridor also includes dams and lake areas along the route, including Buffumville Lake and Buffumville Lake dam.
On the ground in many places, the route is blazed with yellow trail markers (yellow triangles). Because the trail is built from many connecting paths and greenways, navigation planning matters even when you’re doing just a section.
The route is maintained and managed as a long-distance corridor by the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Midstate Trail Committee. The trail has a history of being developed in the 1970s and continues to be updated with current access and local reroute information where needed.
This mapped item is a short, dirt-surface segment of the Midstate Trail near 42.431054, -71.994683. Mapped access for this segment is permissive for foot travel and excludes motor vehicles.
