Mont Xalibu Trail
Mont Xalibu Trail is a demanding day hike in the McGerrigle sector of Parc national de la Gaspésie in Quebec. Plan for about 5 to 6 hours and roughly 540 m of elevation gain to reach the summit area (peak at 1,140 m).
The route starts by Lac aux Américains and climbs immediately into thicker woodland. Expect the ascent to feel steep as the surroundings transition from forested terrain toward higher, more open alpine conditions.
On the climb, the line goes from shaded understory up toward alpine tundra/taiga-like ground types. That transition is a big part of why this is worked hard rather than just long—your pace will change as the ground opens and the exposure increases.
The payoff is at the top: wide panoramic views toward the Chic-Choc Mountains and surrounding valleys. This is one of the park’s signature viewpoints in the McGerrigle area.
If you want a longer outing, there’s a bigger option called the Mont Xalibu Loop (about 17.8 km, 6 to 8 hours) that explores the alpine plateau more extensively.
For timing, the trail is generally listed as open from mid-June to mid-October. Because it’s a remote, challenging hike inside a provincial park, access is tied to registration and payment at the Discovery and Visitors Centre before you set out.
