Nenggao Yueling Trail
Nenggao Yueling Trail (also listed as Nenggao Historic Trail) is a Central Mountain Range traverse in Taiwan with a total length of about 26.5 km. It’s a multi-day route over the island’s main ridge line, with high starting/peak elevations rather than a casual day hike.
Most parties hike it west-to-east because the ascent is described as more gradual in that direction. Typical timing is about 2–3 days for the full traverse, with the ridge portion acting as the main workload.
The high point of the route is tied to the Central Mountain Ridge around the Guangbei Babiao Monument, where the trail reaches roughly 2,800 m+ (the route is described as starting around 2,000 m near the Nantou trailhead). Expect an altitude-driven effort even if you keep daily mileage moderate.
A commonly used milestone split runs from Tunyuan to Tianchi Cabin (13 km), which is the most popular day-hike portion. This west section is associated with the Nenggao Waterfall area plus multiple deep valleys, and it culminates at Tianchi Cabin.
From Tianchi Cabin to the Central Mountain Range ridge is described as a steep climb up to the main spine of Taiwan. Many hikers use Tianchi as a base to reach nearby high summits such as Qilai South Peak (3,358 m) and Nanhua Mountain (3,184 m) before continuing across the ridge.
On the east side, the route descends into Hualien County over about 11 km, passing through Wujia Bengshan and historic forest protection stations before reaching the Tongmen trail entrance. The route’s character shifts from ridge ascent pressure to technical downhill legs and the need to manage fatigue on the descent.
