Nepisiguit Mi'gmaq Trail
Nepisiguit Mi'gmaq Trail (Sentier Nepisiguit Mi'gmaq Trail) is a long wilderness hike in northern New Brunswick that follows the Nepisiguit River from Daly Point Nature Reserve in Bathurst to Mount Carleton Provincial Park. Expect a route built around river-country travel: mountains, river valleys, and a river-delta end area.
The trail is about 137.67 km on this itinerary and is commonly described at roughly 150 km. It was officially opened for hiking in 2018 and traces a recommissioned ancient Mi'gmaq portage route used as a movement corridor between seasonal camps and hunting grounds.
Plan on a multi-day commitment: experienced backpackers typically take 5–6 days, with longer trips possible. There are 21 designated access points along the route, which is how most hikers piece together day sections, shuttles, or partial hikes.
Terrain and effort vary through three main zones (mountain, river valley, delta). The route includes river features and water crossings as part of the “follow the river” character, with highlights noted along the way such as Pabineau Falls and a rope bridge at Gordon Meadow Brook.
The trail group manages the route and emphasizes adding modern safety components while keeping the original path character. The route is divided into numbered sections (A to U) starting at Daly Point Nature Reserve in Bathurst.
Timing matters: the season runs roughly June 1 through October 31, and portions of the trail close during winter. In spring and fall, water levels are high; wet weather and changing conditions are a reality on the ground, so plan around those swings and keep safety gear and navigation ready.
For overnight hikes and longer, registration is required with the trail group. Camps are primitive/limited, and hammock camping or specifically designated tent spots are recommended rather than assuming easy backcountry camp anywhere along the corridor.
Before you set out, scout or inspect any committed features you’ll depend on (notably along rivers), and don’t trust assumptions after rain or high water—conditions can change quickly on a route tied to the Nepisiguit River.
