Nineteen Mile Brook Trail
Nineteen Mile Brook Trail is a moderate long-distance hike in the White Mountain National Forest that serves as an approach to Carter Notch Hut and the Carter Notch/Carter-Moriah and Wildcat areas. The trail follows Nineteen Mile Brook for a substantial portion of the ascent before continuing upward toward the height of land near Carter Notch.
Plan on a steady uphill grade with rocky sections as you climb. A practical way to think about the effort is a climb that starts more gently, then becomes steeper and rockier in the upper portion.
Typical outing length for the trail as commonly hiked runs about 7.4 miles out-and-back, with roughly 1,991 ft of elevation gain; many parties take about 4.5 to 5 hours.
For a hut-focused day, the Nineteen Mile Brook Trailhead parking is on NH Route 16 about 1 mile north of the Mount Washington Auto Road. Carter Notch Hut is reached by hiking 3.8 miles from that trailhead along Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail.
Carter Notch Hut is an overnight base in Carter Notch, and it functions as a turnaround/stop for day hikers as well as longer hut-to-hut routes. The hut area sits at about 3,288 ft on the Nineteen Mile Brook approach.
Terrain contact is largely with ground/scrub and trail tread surfaced as ground; the route alignment is mapped as a path corridor that tracks the brook side during the initial climb.
