Nungar Creek Fire Trail
Nungar Creek Fire Trail is a 23 km return bushwalk in the northern high plains of Kosciuszko National Park, used by both experienced bushwalkers and mountain bikers. The route tracks across open plains and sub-alpine snow gum country, with the trail line leading into the Witses Hut area via Nungar Creek Trail and associated fire-trail connections.
Plan it as a full-day outing: the mapped length supports a single continuous day trip with limited opportunity for short breaks to create a true “go as far as you want” experience.
Track character stays mostly in the “fire trail” style—unpaved and designed for vehicle access—so progress is generally straightforward, but there are still sections that pinch into narrower stretches and include some steeper climbs.
Grades for the walk are set at Grade 3 / Grade 4 for experienced users: expect gentle hills in places, plus occasional steeper efforts that require moderate bushwalking fitness and comfort with long, sustained track travel.
A common way to start is from Tantangara Road: the trailhead is reached by driving about 8 km along Tantangara Road from the Snowy Mountains Highway, then following the Nungar Creek Trail line into the route.
The route is used specifically as a connector into Witses Hut, and it also passes through historic hut country associated with the Witses Hut site.
Season and logistics matter in the high country. Weather can change quickly; carry wet-weather gear, sufficient food, a topographic map (e.g., Tantangara 1:25,000), and enough drinking water for the day.
Kosciuszko National Park can also run temporary closures for feral animal control programs, so check for active alerts before departing; fire trails can additionally be affected by management operations and uneven ground.
