Overland Trail #615

Overland Trail #615 is a remote, multi-use long-distance route in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests (Springerville Ranger District). Plan on a one-way hike of about 16.9 miles (27.2 km) through the higher country near Eagar/Springerville.

The route is designed as short-hiking-specific trail-linking and is meant to be used as a named member-route component. It’s mapped as a dirt path and is open to foot traffic; bicycles and horses are also allowed.

Elevation and terrain vary by section, generally running between about 6,000 and 9,000 ft depending on where you are on the line. Expect mellow grades and gentle elevation changes rather than steep, continuous climbs.

Trail maintenance is limited: the Forest Service classification treats it as unmaintained. Overgrowth and inconsistent routefinding are realistic expectations, so carry navigation (offline maps/GPS) and know how to use it.

Surface/track characteristics aren’t “hike-and-go” all the way through: it’s mapped on a grade-4 tracktype with very poor smoothness. In practice, that combination points to rougher dirt and navigation effort even where the grade isn’t extreme.

Weather swings are a major factor at these elevations in eastern Arizona. Summer thunderstorms can roll through in the afternoon, and the combination of limited maintenance and frequent storms makes solid rain preparation and route reliability planning important.

Dogs are allowed on the route, and the trail is not for motor vehicles.
