If you access the face where this track sits, you can avoid the private land on either side. You will park just off the road, and after crossing the road, you will be on Montana State land which will eventually lead you to BLM land that encompasses most of the mountain. The Sweet Grass Hills are good sized hills sitting in the middle of the prairie. West Butte is an island of wildlife, and an interesting ecosystem isolated in a prairie habitat. There is no trail until you get to the upper part of the mountain were there are numerous game trails through the scree, all leading to the summit. The summit and most of the mountain is excellent elk habitat.
