Red Creek Trail

Red Creek Trail is a long-distance hike in the Dolly Sods Wilderness (Monongahela National Forest). It follows Red Creek along a former rail grade corridor, running through meadows and forests as the route tracks the creek channel.

Expect water features to drive the difficulty. The trail is known for creek and stream crossings, including a major crossing early on, plus additional junction area crossings as you work farther along the creek system.

The route is typically described as strenuous/challenging for a long day. Typical character notes include rugged footing and rocky sections, with a sustained climb after the early creek-valley portion rather than a gentle stroll.

A central reference point is The Forks, a popular dispersed camping area reached after following the creek for the first third. Campsites near The Forks and around splits of Red Creek are a key on-trail planning factor for multi-day parties.

From The Forks, the trail climbs toward the Rocky Point Trail junction, where you can find a connection option that leads toward Lion’s Head. Continuing beyond that junction keeps you working above the creek until the route reconnects with Red Creek after the Breathed Mountain Trail junction.

One common pattern for longer itineraries is to continue north from the junctions to meet the Blackbird Knob Trail connection at the northern end, then complete a loop by returning via the Big Stonecoal Trail route and back toward Laneville Cabin.
